MARATHON PLAY-OFF CLIMAX TO US PGA TOUR EVENT IN MEXICO
The US PGA Tour event being held down in Mexico – the Mayakoba Classic – went into a marathon play-off after American John Huh and Australian Robert Allenby tied on 13-under-par 271. Hugh shot a final round of 63 to Allenby’s 65 at El Camaleon GC, Riviera Maya.
The play-off was still unresolved after seven extra holes, all halved in par figures.
Daniel Summerhays, the man who should have won it from a position of strength after three rounds, blew up with a closing round of two-over-par 73 and finished joint fifth.
England’s Greg Owen, in the title picture at half way, eventually finished T16 with a closing 71 for 278 – two shots ahead of Scotland’s Russell Knox who also matched par in the last round.
